ECIS Librarian Triennial 2018

Librarians are trouble makers. Sara and I have been wanting to get to India for years and our opportunity finally came this year. Last year when we were in Shanghai our librarian and partner in crime Barbara Boyer told us about the ECIS triennial conference. ECIS stands for Educational Collaborative for International Schools. This particular […]

Singapore American School

What can we say? Singapore American School feels like a home away from home for us. We have visited here so many times that we have a favorite grocery store. We love our trips to this school. Why? Because they push us – every time we come they throw another challenge our way that makes […]

Look what I found! A found poem lesson to augment novel study.

So what are we accomplishing here?

We are close reading a text as a group.

We discover themes of our literature.

We are collaborating to discern the importance of what we are reading.

We are taking collaborative research and writing as individuals.

We are getting hands on experience using poetic elements.

We are accepting the extra challenge.

We are working and succeeding through a bit of cognitive dissonance.

We are coming back together to edit and write a finished piece with a partner.

We are sharing our work with an audience.

NCPA is a bit of different flavor of international school – the student body iscomprised of Chinese Nationals who begin their time here and in Englishimmersion in 7th grade. This presents some a particular challenges when offering an AP curriculum with an eye toward graduates enrolling in Western universities. The students and staff certainly are more than up to the task.

The cool thing is the teacher bus for both campuses stopped at exactly the same place outside of our apartment ten minutes apart – so we had that […]

YK Pao International School – Shanghai

We begin this stint in China by speaking to a compilation of local librarians from English speaking schools in the city. A seditious bunch for sure headed up by our host Kendra Perkins who arranged and organized our first three days in Shanghai with the precision of a – well, a librarian.

Police, Poetry, Pupils and Pedagogy

So armed with bags of pretzels we brought our two groups together for a little collaboration. The break down ended up with an officer at a table with six students. We had the officers and students talk about their experience writing poetry about personal conflict.

Poetry, police, pedagogy and perspective.

So, Sara and my latest project involves students and law enforcement officers. It’s something we have been talking about for a long time but never had the chance to implement. We’ve had a couple false starts over the years but we’ve finally got our foot in a door. We’re just starting out and we will […]
